Willem le Roux

Willem le Roux obtained his B Iuris and LLB degrees from the University of Pretoria and was appointed a state advocate in 1976. He joined a Johannesburg firm of attorneys in 1981 and was a director of that firm from 1984 until 1993, when he co-founded Brink Cohen Le Roux.

Willem's specialist areas of practice are occupational and mine health and safety, the environment, administrative law, telecommunications, insurance and litigation. He has represented mining houses and corporations in the chemical, metal and other industries in several inquests, inquiries and litigation of major public interest. He has also represented clients at various Commissions amongst others, the Myburgh Commission concerning violence at certain mines, the Leon Commission concerning health and safety in the mining industry and the Commission concerning the depreciation of the Rand. Willem has represented corporations in major court litigation and arbitrations. He represented ABSA in the Heath Commission proceedings concerning the attempt to recover the loan in excess of R1 billion advanced to Bankorp. Willem has represented mining houses in major litigation arising from silicosis and asbestosis. He presents seminars in his fields of expertise in conjunction with a major publishing company, on a regular basis. He has also been an arbitrator on the water, mines and minerals panel of the Arbitration Foundation of Southern Africa (AFSA).

He has been highly recommended in the most recent edition of the Practical Law Company's Global Counsel Handbook on Labour and Employee Benefits, where he was noted for being ”an occupational health specialist with a strong reputation in the field".

Willem has been listed as one of the pre-eminent mining lawyers by The International Who's Who of Mining Lawyers for 2006.
