Paul Coetser

Paul Coetser is a commercial lawyer, specialising in the areas of mergers and acquisitions, competition law and information technology law. He is the chairperson of the Competition Law Committee of the Law Society of South Africa.

Paul holds LLB and LLM degrees from the University of South Africa. In 1986 he was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship for study in the United States, where he obtained a further LLM degree at the University of Virginia in 1987.

Having practised in the United States and in London for over four years, Paul has extensive experience in the international merger and acquisitions environment. He regularly advises multinational companies and private equity funds on domestic and offshore investments, group reorganisations and corporate finance. He also represents clients in matters before the competition authorities such as merger approvals, complaint investigations, exemption applications and interim relief proceedings.

Paul is a frequent speaker and participant at conferences and seminars on competition law. He has participated in several Focus Group Workshops assisting the Competition Commission in developing new legislation, rules and regulations. He also appeared before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Trade and Industry in Cape Town, to propose amendments to the Competition Act.

Paul has consistently been recommended in The International Who's Who of Business Lawyers and the PLC Cross-border Handbook on Competition as one of South Africa's leading competition lawyers.

In 2002 Paul was the steering force behind the establishment of the SABLA-CLEP, a joint training program of the Black Lawyers Association, the International Senior Lawyers Project and the American Bar Association. The object of the program is to develop and improve the commercial law skills of Black lawyers in South Africa. Since then Paul has been actively involved in SABLA-CLEP to ensure the success of the program.
